The Bure Settle | BORN Awards
2018 Home Runner Up
A year on since &Bespoke was formed, we are incredibly proud to be runner up in the Home design category for the UK BORN Awards 2018 with our Bure Settle.
The BORN Awards, founded by Jean-Christophe Chopin eight years ago, celebrate creativity in design lifestyle combining functionality and desirability. This year, the jury is celebrating products that demonstrate unrivalled, peerless design.
The Bure Settle is part of an exciting new collection ‘Edition One’ launching in June. It’s a member of the Bure family consisting of a dining chair, which is available with or without arms, and a low lounge chair with an accompanying footstool. They are made in solid oak, with either a natural or ebonised finish. Seats are available in Danish cord or bridle leather with the exception of the settle which has a solid oak seat.
Today we thought we’d share a bit of the design process with you, whether you’re a designer yourself or simply have an interest in design, we hope you might find it interesting. Each piece of furniture we design goes through this process, although naturally some pieces taking a bit longer/shorter at each stage depending on the piece.
We are inspired by the simplicity of the materials we want to use, understanding structure and trying to keep details simple and beautiful are key to creating a future icon. A few weeks to a month of drawing in sketchbooks and modelling in 3D on the computer help to work through the concept.
The next 3 months or so are about fine tuning, usually making a 1:5 model and/or getting one printed in 3D (see future blogs on this topic) to further develop the idea and to be able to really understand the design in a tangible object.
After any final amendments to the drawings we are ready to get a full size prototype underway.
We work closely with our chair maker and several 1:1 “hammer and nails” mock-ups help us fine tune the design. This is a lengthy and costly process but is key to creating a great product.
This is the Settle in it’s natural oak finish (in the white) ready to be naturally ebonised. Other finishes are available on request – this is the the beauty of &Bespoke.
Until next time…
